Frequently asked questions

HomePort PackageWhat comes in the HomePort package?

The HomePort package comes with: the HomePort unit, six-foot USB cord and installation instructions. The HomePort comes loaded with all the data from the HomePort Builder and HomePort Workbook.

What do I need to use the HomePort?

A desktop PC, laptop or handheld computer with Microsoft Excel or an Excel-compatible spreadsheet program and a standard USB port. HomePort is both Windows and Mac compatible.

Can I purchase another HomePort unit?

Yes! If you have an established account with Epochal Solutions, log in and click on “Add HomePort.” If not, register and follow the instructions to get started using HomePort.

Can I add pictures or other information to the HomePort?

Yes. You can add any type of file you wish — from Wills and Power of Attorney documents to photos for insurance purposes. If the HomePort is still in the “construction” phase you will need to log into your account and utilize the Add Files function on the builders’ page. If the HomePort is installed in the home, simply plug into the HomePort with the provided USB cord and save the file to the appropriate location on the unit.

Can I make the information on my HomePort safe from fire or flood damage?

The HomePort unit itself is not fireproof. However, the electronic information that was loaded onto the HomePort initially has been permanently stored and can be retrieved in case of fire or other catastrophic damage. Coming soon to the HomePort will be a subscription service where you will be able to upload any changes or upgrades you have made to your HomePort after it is installed. Please check back with us soon to hear about the progress of this new and exciting service.

I am having trouble accessing the HomePort unit installed in my home. What should I do?

When connected correctly, your computer should recognize the HomePort as a new memory device. If not, ensure that the USB connections are secure on both ends. Click on My Computer and see if a memory device is listed among the drives. If no memory device is listed, try another standard USB cable.

I am having difficulty opening the HomePort Workbook.

The HomePort Workbook is a Microsoft Excel-based program. To utilize this tool, you must have Microsoft Excel or a program such as Open Office in order to read the file. After working with the file, it must be saved to your hard drive and then uploaded back to the account. This can be done using the Add File function on the “Building” page.
